John D. Rockefeller, Jr

John D Rockefeller Jr (1874-1960) was the only son of industrialist John D Rockefeller Sr, billionaire founder of the Standard Oil Company. Rockefeller Jr is known primarily as a philanthropist. He graduated from Brown University in 1897, and it was during his studies there that he became acquainted with Brown University President E. Benjamin Andrews.

When Andrews took the helm at Nebraska, it was his desire to provide a building for students to use for non-academic purposes; an early student union of sorts. Rockefeller agreed to donate funds for this building, which led to a firestorm of controversy in 1904. The Temple is the result of this collaboration and was constructed in 1906.
