John Selleck (1889-1982) was born in Lincoln, attended Lincoln public schools, and graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1912. After serving in WWI and working in Chicago, Selleck was hired in 1921 as the University’s Purchasing Agent, then shortly after became the business manager for the Athletic Department and Student Activities. Selleck was instrumental in turning athletic programs at the University into money making enterprises, and with gate receipts, he was able to leverage the construction of both the Coliseum and the Field House, following the successful completion of the Stadium.

In 1941, Selleck was asked by Chancellor Boucher to take over as Comptroller of the University. In 1948, when his friend L. W. Seaton, Operating Superintendent of the University, died suddenly, Selleck added those responsibilities to his job description. Finally, in May of 1953, he was asked by the Board of Regents to serve as interim Chancellor following the resignation of Chancellor Gustavson. Selleck served as Chancellor until Clifford Hardin assumed that role in the summer of 1954. He then served as President of the University Foundation.

Selleck developed and oversaw the construction of many post WWII buildings on the University campuses. The Board of Regents recognized his contributions by naming the newly constructed dormitories in his honor in 1954. Selleck retired in 1962 when he was he was 73 years old, and lived another 20 years, dying in 1982. He was fondly nicknamed “Mr. University”.
