Raymond Hall

Carrie Belle Raymond was one of the important women faculty members associated with the University of Nebraska in the early 20th century. Her association with the University began in the 1890's and continued until her death in 1927.

Mrs. Raymond was named as Director of Music at the University by Chancellor Canfield in 1894. In addition to her work at the University, she was very active in the cultural life of Lincoln, and served as organist for First Congregational Church, organized the annual May Festival, and carried out a production of the Messiah each year. University Chorus thrived under her leadership. Popular with students and well regarded within the community, Mrs. Raymond provided a role model of independence and vigor.

Carrie Belle Raymond's contributions to the cultural life of Lincoln were acknowledged in several ways. After her death in 1927, the Carillon Tower at First Plymouth Congregational Church was dedicated to her when the church was completed in 1931. The first women's dormitories were named in her honor as well. Raymond Hall was dedicated in 1932.
