L W Chase served as the first Chairman of the Agricultural Engineering department. In 1905 Chase was in charge of the Farm Mechanics section within Mechanical Engineering. The department was formally renamed and separated from Engineering in 1908 and Chase continued to serve as its Chair until 1920.
During most of Chase's academic career he worked in a small building known as Machinery Hall, located just east of the Plant Industry Building. In 1915, when funding was available for a new building, Chase worked closely with the architects on the design of the new building, Agricultural Engineering.
Chase was educated at the University of Nebraska, receiving a BS and an ME, and earned a Masters degree in Agricultural Engineering from Iowa State in 1914. He resigned from the University in 1920 to become President of the Farm Machinery Manufacturing Co. in Lincoln.
